Domaine du dauphin d'Auvergne, Pontgibaud fut érigé en comté au XVIe siècle par le roi de France Henri III. La petite ville, que ses habitants surnommèrent « l'Athènes de la montagne », connut un riche passé historique que nous relate Ambroise Tardieu, historien du XIXe siècle de grand talent.
